I recently had the opportunity to put together a memorial video of my mum in law for a celebration of her life. We had quite an assortment of photos of her from 1943-2018, some were taken professionally (in the 1950’s) on what must have been a medium format camera, some on box brownies and most of the family shots were on the little instamatic 126 film cameras of the 1970s.
The interesting thing here for me was to compare the quality. The medium format professional shots and the home made box brownie shots have definitely stood the test of time far better than those taken on the instamatic camera’s of the 1970’s. Sure the cameras were smaller and easier to handle, but the quality of the photo was considerably more degraded.
It occurred to me that the we will have a whole generation of people who will be in the same situation. They will have many selfies of them taking with their forward facing cameras that will be degraded in terms of colour and light and not really stand the test of time. Sometimes technology updates and changes are not always improving our photographic memories!
